Restoration can be as simple as a cleaning and overhaul, or it can be more complicated. For a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration, a lot of work can need to be done, but just to get the watch in running order will usually only require a cleaning and overhaul and possibly getting parts inside the watch replaced.
The different cosmetic parts that usually need to be restored are the crown, which should be kept original if possible, the crystal, the band, which can be polished or replaced, sometimes the bezel, sometimes the hands if they are rusted, and only if it is necessary, the dial. In mechanical restoration, it usually will only require a cleaning and overhaul and maybe a mainspring replacement. Sometimes other parts that are prone to wear are necessary to replace too. In quartz watches, the entire movement will need to be replaced if it is old or worn. But the movement is easy to replace with the same type of movement except in unique cases.
