Enicar was founded in 1913 by Ariste Racine in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and became known for producing durable, high-precision timepieces, particularly for professional and sports use. The brand gained prominence with its Sherpa series in the 1950s and 1960s, which were favored by mountaineers, divers, and pilots, including their role in the 1956 Swiss expedition to Mount Everest. Enicar was also an early adopter of automatic movements and water-resistant designs, making significant innovations in the watch industry. However, like many Swiss brands, it struggled during the quartz crisis of the 1970s, leading to bankruptcy in 1988.
The brand name was later acquired by a Hong Kong-based company, which continues to produce Enicar-branded watches, primarily for the Asian market.
