HISTORY OF LEMANIA

The Legacy of Lemania: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Lemania watches are possibly the greatest watches that you’ve never heard of. They boast the only mechanical chronograph ever approved by Nasa for use inside and outside their space vehicles. They issued every wrist of the British armed forces a chronograph watch throughout the 1950s and 1960s. They provided every chronograph movement that either Tissot or Omega used until the 1970s, including Omega’s Speedmaster Professional, the Moonwatch that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon.

Lemania Watch Company was a Swiss manufacturer and manufacturer of watch movements founded, in 1884, by Alfred Lugrin. In 1932, Lemania, Omega and Tissot merged to form the SSIH group. In 1981, Lemania changed its name to Nouvelle Lemania after separating from SSIH – a result of the ‘Quartz Crisis’. In 1992, the brand was purchased by Breguet. Lemania movements are still used today in numerous well-known watch brands.
