The inspiration behind the Stowa Antea watch lies in the minimalist Bauhaus design movement of the early 20th century, which emphasized function, simplicity, and geometric form. Originally created in the 1930s, the Antea was designed with clean lines, slim hands, and a stark, uncluttered dial, embodying the Bauhaus ideal of “form follows function.” When Stowa revived the model under Jörg Schauer’s leadership, the Antea stayed true to its roots, offering a modern reinterpretation of the original while preserving its elegant, understated aesthetic—a hallmark of both Bauhaus architecture and watch design.

The Stowa Flieger watch draws its inspiration from the Beobachtungsuhren (B-Uhr) timepieces produced during World War II for German Luftwaffe pilots. In 1940, Stowa was one of five manufacturers commissioned to create these watches, adhering to strict specifications set by the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM). The design prioritized legibility and functionality, featuring a large 55mm case, a black dial with luminous Arabic numerals, an oversized onion-shaped crown for operation with gloves, and a distinctive triangle with two dots at the 12 o’clock position for orientation. These elements ensured that pilots could easily read the time during missions. Today, Stowa’s Flieger collection pays homage to this heritage, maintaining the classic design elements while incorporating modern craftsmanship.

HISTORY OF STOWA

The Legacy of Stowa: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Stowa was founded in 1927 by Walter Storz in Hornberg, Germany, with its name derived from “Storz” and “Walter.” After moving to Pforzheim in the 1930s, it became one of five brands commissioned by the German Luftwaffe in the 1940s to produce B-Uhr pilot watches, now iconic for their clarity and durability.

Though the factory was destroyed in a 1945 bombing, Stowa rebuilt and launched enduring collections like the Bauhaus-inspired Antea and marine chronometer-style Marine. Acquired by Jörg Schauer in 1996, the brand blends tradition with innovation and remains highly regarded for its historical design and quality craftsmanship.
